About Us

For over 25 years, La Plata Open Space Conservancy has functioned as a private, non profit, 501(c)(3) charitable organization serving southwestern Colorado and northwestern New Mexico.

Based in Durango, Colorado, LPOSC holds conservation easements in seven counties — La Plata, Montezuma, Hinsdale, Ouray, Archuleta, San Juan CO and San Juan NM.

Currently, LPOSC has worked to protect over 20,000 acres of land through conservation easements that have been donated by private and municipal landowners.

LPOSC is proud to have aided in the protection of an additional 10,000 acres protected by partnering land trusts and other land management organizations. These lands host qualities of significant value to our community, including open space, wildlife habitat, recreational parks, working family farms and ranches, and historical and archaeological resources.

In 2010, LPOSC gained national recognition as an Accredited Land Trust.

There are almost 1,700 land trusts across the United States. LPOSC is one of only 350 that are accredited by the Land Trust Accreditation Commission. Our community and landowners can rest assured that through this mark of distinction, we uphold national standards and practices that best serve to protect open space in cooperation with private and municipal landowners and for the benefit of the general public.

The number of acres LPOSC protects increases each year, as landowners seek permanent ways to protect their property for the benefit of their family, the resources, the community and future generations.

Who We Are

Our directors are an unpaid, all-volunteer board that is devoted to the support and operations of LPOSC. Staff includes one full-time Executive Director, one full-time Stewardship Coordinator, and consultants hired for seasonal projects. The invaluable support and cooperation of volunteers, student interns, donors, and landowners ties our work together. Financial support of our work comes from our membership of over 500 individuals, donations and grants, and fundraising events.
