Community Conservation Partnerships in Southwest Colorado
Organizations We Work With:
Working alongside Durango Trails, LPOSC helps build and maintain public trail access on protected open spaces throughout La Plata County, including trail systems at Horse Gulch and Overend Mountain Park. This partnership keeps recreation and conservation working hand in hand, ensuring the lands we protect stay open and accessible to the community.
LPOSC partners with Southwest Conservation Corps through hands-on habitat restoration across protected lands in southwest Colorado. This partnership allows our community to accomplish critical conservation projects while providing young adults an opportunity to learn about land management issues and challenges. This work gives these young conservationists real field experience while directly improving the health of the land we protect.
LPOSC partners with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Colorado to connect youth in our community with hands-on conservation experiences. Every summer, the two organizations come together for the annual Firefly Viewing Party, a youth firefly education event held on a private conserved property near Durango. The event encourages Bigs and Littles to come together for an evening of guided firefly viewing alongside conservation and youth education programming. It's one of several ways LPOSC brings mentoring and land stewardship together.
